Proper nutrition is vital to your pet’s health. Different species of animals have their own needs with regard to caloric intake and specific nutrients. Bodhi Animal Hospital can help you develop a diet that will keep your pets healthy and active.

Pet Nutritional Needs

The larger a pet is, the more calories he or she will need each day. While smaller, less active dogs need only 185-370 calories on a daily basis, larger dogs (67-88 pounds) may need 1,000-2,000 calories. A 10-pound cat needs 220-350 calories each day. With such a wide range of needs, owners must be careful not to overfeed pets. It is believed that at least 33% of dogs and 25% of cats in the United States are overweight.

When planning your pet’s diet, you should note how much protein is needed and where that protein comes from. Cats, for example, not only need a lot of protein in their diet but need to get that protein from meat and fish. Trying to feed cats another protein source will prevent them from getting the specific nutritional content required for their overall health. Dogs, on the other hand, can get their protein not just from meat and fish but also from some vegetables like Brussels sprouts.

Additionally, about one-third of a cat’s daily calories and 9-15% of a dog’s daily calories should come from fats.

Of course, it is also critical to make sure cats and dogs receive enough clean water each day in order to remain adequately hydrated. Refill a dog’s water bowl at least once a day and keep a few water dishes around your home for cats.
